About QED Technologies®

We’re Building What’s Next

QED Technologies designs and delivers advanced polishing, metrology, and software solutions that enable the most demanding optical manufacturing challenges. Our work sits at the intersection of science, engineering, and production reality.

Global Leadership in Precision Optics

QED Technologies International is a global leader in precision optics manufacturing and metrology solutions. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Rochester, New York, a city widely recognized as a global center of excellence for optics and photonics, QED Technologies develops advanced technologies that help optics manufacturers achieve higher precision, faster throughput, and greater process confidence.

The company’s origins are closely tied to the University of Rochester and the Center for Optical Manufacturing (COM), where foundational research and innovation helped shape the technologies that became QED Technologies’ core solutions.

Pioneering Deterministic Polishing and Metrology

QED Technologies is best known as the pioneer and exclusive provider of Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF®). This deterministic polishing technology delivers predictable, repeatable surface correction across a wide range of optical geometries. MRF has transformed optical polishing by delivering nanometer-level accuracy, shorter cycle times, and higher yield.

To support closed-loop manufacturing, QED Technologies also developed Subaperture Stitching Interferometry (SSI™), an advanced interferometric metrology technology that provides accurate full-aperture surface measurements for large, complex optics.

Expanding Capabilities Through Global Growth

In 2025, QED Technologies expanded its metrology portfolio through the acquisition of Dutch United Instruments, adding NMF™ Metrology to its technology offerings and establishing a European headquarters in the Netherlands. NMF technology delivers fast, nanometer-accurate measurement of flat, spherical, aspheric, and freeform optics, complementing QED Technologie’s existing metrology solutions.

Today, QED Technologies serves customers worldwide across industries including aerospace, defense, semiconductor manufacturing, scientific research, and advanced imaging. With a portfolio spanning polishing, metrology, and integrated manufacturing solutions, QED Technologies continues to advance the future of precision optics manufacturing.

The Team Behind the Technology

QED Technologies is powered by a multidisciplinary team of optical engineers, software developers, applications specialists, and manufacturing professionals. Many of our team members have decades of experience working directly with customer processes, not just product design.

This depth of expertise allows us to support customers from initial evaluation through long term production success.

About QED Technologies Europe

QED Technologies Europe develops, manufactures, and delivers advanced ultra-precision metrology instruments for aspheric and freeform optics, with a primary focus on NMF metrology systems. In addition to its metrology expertise, QED Europe oversees and manages the European and Chinese markets for the full portfolio of QED Technologies products, including MRF® polishing systems and ASI™ metrology systems.

QED Europe operates through three core departments that collaborate closely with QED Technologies’ global teams to deliver integrated, high-quality solutions. A multidisciplinary development team spanning mechatronics, software and controls, mechanical, and optical engineering supports products from concept to manufacturable design and enhances existing platforms. The operations team transforms individual components into fully assembled, tested, and qualified systems with a strong focus on quality, consistency, and deployment readiness. Complementing these efforts, sales and service engineers work directly with customers to understand application requirements, deliver tailored solutions across the QED Technologies product portfolio, and ensure systems are properly installed, supported, and maintained throughout their lifecycle.
